What is it?

Wave is a cross-platform terminal for macOS, Linux and Windows that combines a classic shell with an AI assistant, a file previewer and a graphical editor in one window. Terminal blocks, editors, web browsers and AI chat panels can be arranged by drag and drop, and any block can be expanded to full screen and restored.

The AI assistant, Wave AI, can read terminal output and scrollback, and perform file reads and edits with backups and user approval. It works with your own API keys for OpenAI, Claude, Gemini and Azure, or with local models through Ollama, LM Studio and other OpenAI-compatible providers. No account is required.

For remote work, SSH sessions persist across network interruptions and Wave restarts with automatic reconnection. Remote files can be edited in a built-in editor and previewed inline, including markdown, images, video, PDFs and CSVs. The wsh command-line tool manages the workspace and copies files between local and remote hosts.

Key features

  • 01Wave AI reads terminal output and can read, write and edit files with user approval.
  • 02SSH sessions survive network changes and restarts, with automatic reconnection.
  • 03Built-in editor with syntax highlighting for editing remote files.
  • 04Inline previews for markdown, images, video, PDFs, CSVs and directories.
  • 05Drag-and-drop layout for terminals, editors, browsers and AI panels, with full-screen toggle.
  • 06The wsh CLI manages the workspace and copies files between local and remote hosts.

Use cases

  • Debugging on remote servers while letting an AI assistant read logs and scrollback.
  • Working on unstable networks where long-running SSH sessions must not drop.
  • Running local LLMs through Ollama or LM Studio inside the terminal.
  • Editing and previewing remote project files without leaving the terminal.

Things to know

  • Requires a 64-bit or arm64 system with macOS 11+, Windows 10 1809+, or a glibc-2.28+ Linux distribution.
  • Wave AI is in free beta, and its command execution feature is still coming soon.
  • Using AI features with cloud models requires your own API keys, while local models need Ollama or LM Studio set up separately.
