What is it?

FilmCraft is a professional non-linear video editor with a familiar panel-and-timeline layout covering editing, color grading, effects, audio mixing, titles and captions, and export. Its codecs (H.264, HEVC, ProRes, VP8, VP9, AV1, Opus, AAC and others) and containers are implemented in its own Rust code rather than FFmpeg, and it runs natively on macOS, Windows and Linux as well as in the browser via WebAssembly.

Editing uses integer tick timing so edits do not drift at common frame rates, and the timeline supports three-point editing, ripple, roll and slip trims, and dynamic trimming. Color grading covers basic correction, curves, color wheels, HSL secondary and vignette, with scopes computed from the graded frame. Audio includes loudness metering to ITU-R BS.1770 and EBU R128, a mixer with inserts and sends, and clip effects.

Every menu item and control maps to a command that can be run from the UI, a CLI, a JSON control channel or an MCP server, so AI agents can drive the editor. Interchange with FCP 7 XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF is included. The project is in alpha, and its own docs list gaps such as no plugin hosting and no native .prproj import.

Key features

  • 01Three-point editing with ripple, roll, slip and slide trims
  • 02Color grading with curves, color wheels, HSL secondary and scopes
  • 03Audio mixer with loudness metering to EBU R128 and clip effects
  • 04Keyframing with Bezier curves and value and velocity graphs
  • 05Own codec implementations for H.264, HEVC, ProRes, VP9, AV1 and more
  • 06Interchange with FCP 7 XML, FCPXML, OpenTimelineIO, EDL, AAF and OMF

Use cases

  • Cutting and grading short films or documentaries on macOS, Windows or Linux
  • Building an editing pipeline that an AI agent drives through a command API
  • Exchanging timelines with other NLE applications via XML, AAF or OTIO
  • Studying a from-scratch implementation of video codecs and a GPU compositor in Rust
