What is it?
NetAlertX is a self-hosted platform for tracking the devices connected to one or more networks. It runs continuous scans to find new and returning devices, detects connection state changes and IP address management (IPAM) drift, and keeps a central inventory of assets. Its discovery methods include arp-scan, Pi-hole and DHCP lease imports, a UniFi controller import, and SNMP-enabled router import, with a plugin system for building custom scanners.
When something changes, NetAlertX can send notifications through more than 80 services via Apprise, as well as Pushsafer, Pushover and NTFY. Workflows can automatically categorize newly found devices, group devices by vendor, unarchive devices that come back online, or delete stale entries. Data is exposed through an API, webhooks, Home Assistant integration and Prometheus metrics export.
For managed service providers and NOC teams, Sync Nodes let collectors at remote sites, VLANs or branch offices send inventory back to a central hub. Scan data is stored locally by default, and the project is distributed as a Docker image with bare-metal installation also documented.
Key features
- 01Continuous discovery with arp-scan, Pi-hole, DHCP lease, UniFi and SNMP router imports
- 02Change detection for new devices, connection state and IPAM drift
- 03Notifications through Apprise (80+ services), Pushover, Pushsafer and NTFY
- 04Workflows that categorize, group, unarchive or delete devices automatically
- 05API, webhooks, Home Assistant integration and Prometheus metrics export
Use cases
- Spotting unauthorized or shadow IT devices on a home or office network
- Tracking IP address changes and keeping an up-to-date device inventory
- Monitoring several customer or branch networks from one central dashboard
- Sending alerts to phone or chat apps when new devices join the network
Quick start
- 1
Start NetAlertX with Docker
docker run -d --network=host --restart unless-stopped --cap-add=NET_RAW --cap-add=NET_ADMIN --cap-add=NET_BIND_SERVICE -v /local_data_dir:/data -v /etc/localtime:/etc/localtime:ro --tmpfs /tmp:uid=20211,gid=20211,mode=1700 -e PORT=20211 -e APP_CONF_OVERRIDE='{"GRAPHQL_PORT":"20214"}' ghcr.io/netalertx/netalertx:latest - 2
Or clone the source repository
git clone https://github.com/netalertx/NetAlertX.git - 3
Enter the project directory and build with Docker Compose
cd NetAlertX && docker compose up --force-recreate --build
Things to know
- Network scanning needs elevated container capabilities and host networking on Linux.
- Some scanners such as ARP may not detect devices on different subnets.
- Wi-Fi-only networks may require alternate scanners for accurate detection.
- Users upgrading from older versions must follow the migration guide.
