What is it?
pi-agents is an extension for Pi that lets you hand a task to a named agent and keep working while it runs. When the agent finishes, its final message comes back into your Pi conversation. You can watch any running agent live, send it messages, attach to its session, or stop it.
Agents are stored durably, so they survive crashes and restarts. Agents can also be arranged into graphs, where agents pass results to one another and Pi receives a single combined message at the end. Agents may spawn further agents, which makes it possible to fan out work such as reviewing each file in a directory and merging the findings.
Agents run inside the Pi process and reuse your Pi logins, models, MCP servers, and shared extension tools. Installation is done with pi install npm:pi-agents.
Key features
- 01Delegate tasks to named agents that run in the background
- 02Watch, message, attach to, or stop running agents
- 03Agent state persists across crashes and restarts
- 04Compose agents into graphs that pass results between them
- 05Agents can spawn further agents to split up work
- 06Reuses Pi's models, logins, MCP servers, and extension tools
Use cases
- Running a code review in the background while continuing your own work
- Splitting a codebase audit across parallel agents and merging their findings
- Coordinating a fix between two agents that exchange messages
- Running the same review on several models and comparing the results
Quick start
- 1
Install the package into Pi
pi install npm:pi-agents - 2
In Pi, ask an agent to run a delegated task in the background
