Durable, named agents for the Pi coding agent that run delegated tasks in the background, can be messaged, and survive restarts.

What is it?
Durable Pi is a network of persistent AI agents built on pi-durable. Each device runs a small server, dpi-backend, which owns its agents, their SQLite databases and their tools. Clients connect with a URL and a bearer token, through a web hub that monitors all devices, a terminal client called dpi-tui, or a single curl request.
Agents commit history, queued input, task checkpoints and application state to SQLite before output is shown. If the browser closes, the terminal quits or the machine restarts mid-tool, the run resumes from its last checkpoint. Tools that may have partially run come back as interrupted results instead of being silently repeated.
The repo also includes a proactive demo in which a durable agent is started by a log-watching event and prepares a fix for approval. It supports compaction, forks, a shared JSON app state, durable jobs and per-agent tool control. Devices are declared in a YAML file and set up over SSH, systemd, launchd or exe.dev.
Key features
- 01Agents persist history, queued input and checkpoints to SQLite before output is shown.
- 02Runs resume from the last checkpoint after a client disconnect or device restart.
- 03Web UI, terminal client (dpi-tui) and a plain HTTP API share one agent backend.
- 04Fork any agent at any entry, and subagents nest under their parent.
- 05Shared JSON app state with atomic path updates and 409 conflict detection.
- 06Devices are declared in YAML and deployed over SSH, systemd, launchd or exe.dev.
Use cases
- Running a personal coding agent on a home server or cloud VM that you can reach from any device.
- Building a proactive agent that starts from log events and prepares work before you check in.
- Letting several engineers watch and steer the same agent during an incident.
- Embedding a durable, multi-client agent behind your own product's UI.
Quick start
- 1
Copy the env template and set OPENROUTER_API_KEY
cp .env.example .env - 2
Copy the network config template
cp dpi-network.example.yaml dpi-network.yaml - 3
Install dependencies for all packages
just install - 4
Register this machine and build the web UI, then start the backend
just net up local
Things to know
- Requires Node.js 24, just, zsh and an OpenRouter API key to run.
- Remote devices need passwordless ssh and some setup per machine.
