What is it?
Codewhale is a coding agent that runs in your terminal. Given a task, it reads the repository, edits files and runs shell commands until the task is done or it needs your input. It ships with more than 40 built-in providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepSeek, Google, Mistral and OpenRouter, and it can also use any OpenAI-compatible endpoint or local models served through Ollama, vLLM or SGLang.
By default, shell commands other than read-only ones wait for your approval, and two modes (Plan, Work, Operate) plus three permission levels (Ask, Auto-Review, Full Access) control how much the agent can do on its own. The /receipts command lists the files changed, commands run, and web and MCP calls made, and /undo reverts the last request's file changes.
The same engine powers the interactive terminal app, a non-interactive exec mode for scripts and CI, a local web UI, a PR review command, a local HTTP Runtime API and an Agent Client Protocol server for editors. It supports MCP servers, skills, plugins and hooks.
Key features
- 01Works with 40+ built-in model providers and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- 02Supports local models through Ollama, vLLM and SGLang
- 03Asks before running non-read-only shell commands, with Ask, Auto-Review and Full Access permission levels
- 04Records a receipt of files changed, commands run and external calls
- 05Undoes the last request's file changes with /undo
- 06Connects MCP servers, skills, plugins and hooks
Use cases
- Fixing failing tests or making multi-file changes in a git repository from the terminal
- Running coding tasks non-interactively in scripts or CI with codewhale exec
