What is it?
Null Motion is a local preview tool for studying how a motion-graphics ad was built. The finished film plays full width on top, and each of its sections has a plain HyperFrames draft underneath: black-and-white, Arial type, flat shapes and one simple move. A playhead runs across the drafts, and the draft for the section currently on screen follows the film frame by frame and gets an orange outline.
The project runs with Node.js 22+ and has no runtime dependencies. After npm start, the page at 127.0.0.1:4343 plays three bundled references, and the Download menu exports the whole preview as a 1920-wide, 24 Mbps MP4 with the film's audio. Export works in Chrome or Edge because it relies on WebCodecs and requestVideoFrameCallback. Frames are rendered at half speed rather than recorded in real time, so none are dropped.
You can import your own reference videos with a Python script that uses FFmpeg and ffprobe, then describe each section's beats in a JSON file. The project does not include AI generation or hosted features such as captions and pause cuts, which belong to a separate product.
Key features
- 01Plays a finished ad with synced black-and-white HyperFrames drafts for each section.
- 02Highlights the active section's draft and follows the film frame by frame.
- 03Exports the full breakdown as a 1920-wide, 24 Mbps MP4 with audio.
- 04Runs locally with Node.js 22+ and no dependencies or API keys.
- 05Imports your own reference videos and detects scene cuts with FFmpeg.
Use cases
- Studying how a professional motion-graphics ad is structured, section by section.
- Pitching a motion concept by showing the rough plan next to the finished film.
- Exporting a shareable video that compares a finished ad with its drafts.
- Breaking down your own reference videos for a motion design project.
