What is it?

Open Archiver is a self-hosted platform for keeping a long-term, tamper-evident copy of email. It can ingest mail from Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, IMAP servers, PST files, Mbox files and zipped .eml collections, with continuous synchronization for connected accounts.

Emails are stored in the standard .eml format, with deduplication and compression to reduce storage use, and files are encrypted at rest. Storage can be local disk or S3-compatible object storage such as AWS S3 or MinIO. File hashes are recorded at ingestion so later changes to archived content can be detected.

The search layer indexes full message text and attachments, including PDF and DOCX, and offers thread discovery, retention policies, legal holds and an immutable audit log. The stack is SvelteKit, Node.js with Express, PostgreSQL, Meilisearch and Redis (or Valkey), deployed with Docker Compose.

Key features

  • 01Imports from Gmail, Microsoft 365, IMAP, PST, Mbox and .eml files
  • 02Stores emails as .eml with deduplication, compression and encryption at rest
  • 03Supports local disk or S3-compatible object storage
  • 04Full-text search across emails and attachments such as PDF and DOCX
  • 05Thread discovery, retention policies and legal holds
  • 06Immutable audit trail of system activity

Things to know

  • Licensed under AGPL-3.0, a strong copyleft license that may restrict how you can use or distribute modified versions.
  • Requires Docker and Docker Compose, plus at least 4GB of RAM (2GB with external Postgres, Redis and Meilisearch).
  • Self-hosting requires you to set admin passwords and secret keys in the .env file before use.
