What is it?

MediaMTX is a live media server and media proxy that routes real-time video and audio streams from publishers to readers. Publishers can send streams over Media-over-QUIC, SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, MPEG-TS or RTP, and viewers can read them over several of the same protocols, including HLS in browsers and players such as VLC.

Streams are converted automatically between protocols, so a camera publishing over RTSP can be watched over WebRTC or HLS without extra processing. The server can serve several streams under separate paths, keep an always-available stream running when the publisher is offline, record streams to disk as fMP4 or MPEG-TS, and play recordings back.

It ships as a single executable for Linux, Windows and macOS with no runtime dependencies. Configuration can be hot-reloaded without disconnecting clients, and it offers internal, HTTP or JWT authentication, hooks, a Control API and Prometheus-compatible metrics.

Key features

  • 01Publish and read streams over RTSP, RTMP, WebRTC, SRT, HLS, MPEG-TS, RTP and Media-over-QUIC.
  • 02Automatically converts streams from one protocol to another.
  • 03Records streams to disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS and plays them back.
  • 04Keeps always-available streams running when the publisher is offline.
  • 05Reloads configuration without disconnecting existing clients.
  • 06Ships as a single dependency-free executable for Linux, Windows and macOS.

Use cases

  • Aggregating IP camera feeds over RTSP and making them viewable in browsers via WebRTC or HLS.
  • Receiving OBS Studio or FFmpeg live streams and redistributing them to multiple viewer protocols.
  • Recording surveillance or broadcast streams to disk and replaying them later.
  • Proxying or forwarding live streams between servers or networks.
