What is it?

Clean My WeChat is a desktop utility that removes cached media and files that the PC version of WeChat downloads automatically from group and private chats. Over time these downloads can take up tens of gigabytes, much of it from conversations the user never opened.

The tool detects all WeChat and WeCom accounts on the machine and lets the user choose which types to remove (files, images, videos) and how old files must be before deletion, with a default of 365 days. Deleted items are moved to the recycle bin so they can be checked before emptying. Text chat history is not touched, and scheduled automatic cleaning is supported.

It is built with Python and PyQt5 and ships as a Windows zip and a macOS dmg. It supports WeChat 4.0 and later as well as enterprise WeChat.

Key features

  • 01Automatically detects all WeChat and WeCom accounts on the computer.
  • 02Lets you choose which file types to delete: files, images or videos.
  • 03Deletes only files older than a configurable age, defaulting to 365 days.
  • 04Moves deleted items to the recycle bin so you can review them first.
  • 05Supports scheduled automatic cleaning.

Use cases

  • Freeing several gigabytes on a Windows or Mac laptop that is filling up with WeChat group media.
  • Cleaning up old chat downloads on a work computer that also runs enterprise WeChat.
  • Setting up periodic cleanup so WeChat media does not accumulate again.

Quick start

  1. 1

Download the Windows zip from the GitHub releases page

  2. 2

Things to know

  • Windows and macOS only; no Linux support is mentioned.

  • Deleted files go to the Recycle Bin and must be emptied manually to free space.
