What is it?
Pi-Remote attaches to a running pi terminal session through pi's official extension API, without modifying pi's source or taking over the terminal. The session keeps running in the local pi process, while a browser shows a real-time mirror of it. From the browser you can send messages, switch models and thinking levels, compact context, create or fork sessions, and navigate the session tree.
The system has three parts: a sync extension running inside pi, a Node relay service that handles authentication and forwarding, and a web UI served by the relay. Several machines can connect to one relay, and each device is reachable only while its attach window is open. A serverless mode runs the relay on your own computer, with phones connecting over the same Wi-Fi or through a temporary Cloudflare Tunnel.
The project is designed for personal, single-user use. Remote bash is disabled by default, and the extension and viewer use separate tokens. Conversation content is not persisted unless persistence is enabled.
Key features
- 01Real-time mirroring of pi terminal output, tool calls and status to the browser
- 02Remote messages with queueing or steering while pi is busy
- 03Remote model and thinking-level switching, manual compaction, and session tree navigation
- 04QR-code device linking and support for multiple connected machines
- 05Serverless LAN mode with an optional on-demand Cloudflare Tunnel
- 06Separate desktop and mobile layouts with several visual skins
Use cases
- Checking on a long-running coding agent task from a phone
- Answering prompts from pi while away from the desk
- Controlling pi sessions on several machines from one browser dashboard
Quick start
- 1
Install the pi terminal coding agent (requires Node 22.18 or newer)
npm install -g @earendil-works/pi-coding-agent - 2
Install Pi-Remote dependencies in the project folder
npm install - 3
Start the relay on your machine (web UI on port 7002)
npm run relay
Things to know
- Requires the pi coding agent to be installed separately; Pi-Remote does not include it.
- Multi-device use through a relay needs a server you manage, except in local loop mode.
- Designed for personal, single-user use with no multi-user permission system.
- Anyone with the viewer token can send messages and commands to pi, so the token must be protected.
