What is it?

ebook-to-mindmap is a web and desktop tool that parses EPUB and PDF books, extracts their chapter structure, and sends the content to an AI model to produce text summaries or mind maps. It can generate a summary for each chapter, an analysis of how chapters relate, a whole-book summary, or a separate mind map per chapter or one combined map for the whole book.

Users can bring their own Google Gemini or OpenAI API key, in which case requests go directly from the browser to the provider, or sign in to use the built-in hosted model. Chapters can be grouped before processing, and custom prompts can either supplement or fully replace the default system prompt in text summary mode. Processing progress is cached so an interrupted run can resume, and finished results can be viewed offline.

The mind maps are built with mind-elixir and can be exported as data files for editing in the Mind Elixir desktop app. The same frontend runs as a website or as a Tauri 2 desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Key features

  • 01Parses EPUB and PDF files and extracts chapter structure, including smart chapter detection.
  • 02Offers chapter summaries, chapter relationship analysis, and whole-book summaries.
  • 03Generates per-chapter or whole-book mind maps that can be exported as data files.
  • 04Supports Google Gemini and OpenAI models via your own API key or a sign-in hosted model.
  • 05Caches AI results so interrupted processing can resume.

Use cases

  • Skimming a long nonfiction or technical book by reviewing chapter summaries first.
  • Turning a textbook into a mind map for study or review.
  • Building an editable outline of a book in Mind Elixir for further annotation.
  • Running summaries on your own API key without sending data through a third-party proxy.

Quick start

  1. 1

Make sure Node.js 20+ and pnpm 9+ are installed

  2. 2

    Install dependencies

    pnpm install
  3. 3

Start the development server at http://localhost:5173

    pnpm dev

Things to know

  • Needs your own AI API key (BYOK) or a Mind Elixir account with star balance for the hosted model.
  • Some AI providers may block browser requests due to CORS; the desktop app is suggested in that case.
  • Whole-book mind map mode can fail for long books that exceed the model's context window.
